Storing crystal structures in the free repository jointly provided by CCDC and FIZ Karlsruhe offers numerous advantages that significantly benefit the scientific community. By making crystal structures Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, our repository enables researchers to work with the existing data for new analyses, comparisons, and experiments. FAIR crystal structure data also promote data integrity and reliability, as repeated use and validation of crystal structures by different researchers can uncover and correct errors or inconsistencies.

Long-Term Preservation

The crystal structure depot as well as the Crystal Structure Database (CSD) and the ICSD, which are both partly created from deposited crystal structures, ensure the long-term preservation of crystal structures, safeguarding valuable scientific data for future generations. Traditional storage methods, such as physical records or private databases, are vulnerable to damage, loss, and technological obsolescence, while the repository and the two databases are constantly adjusting their data to fit modern standards. The CSD and the ICSD both are certified by CoreTrustSeal as trustworthy and reliable data archives.

Easy Referencing of Structures

Researchers can easily access and cite deposited structures in their work, promoting transparency and reproducibility in scientific research. Unique identifiers and standardized formats used in these repositories facilitate precise and unambiguous referencing, reducing the risk of errors and enhancing the credibility of scientific publications.
